As is fairly typical -- I have about 100 stamps to mount and will print ~50 pages to do it. Came across this nice engraved stamp ... engraver is Sverre Morken who has designed and engraved many of Norway's stamps over the last several decades.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2i83ff2_rOwrcbh3Z_Jszk9y7CiBqNdIwtdPwZib7Hn_kDQMki-97DqR5kJpa1RouwaCVyQ50Xl6w3MRnL6fkArahO4cVHP21T79z4ufcD9IuG-YBaNrBQjU9FQk9BS84UYJqbJp3q_7r/s2048/MVIMG_20200825_092945.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1602" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2i83ff2_rOwrcbh3Z_Jszk9y7CiBqNdIwtdPwZib7Hn_kDQMki-97DqR5kJpa1RouwaCVyQ50Xl6w3MRnL6fkArahO4cVHP21T79z4ufcD9IuG-YBaNrBQjU9FQk9BS84UYJqbJp3q_7r/s640/MVIMG_20200825_092945.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>clifhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15275057382385144812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6316433756215801144.post-86834435164621033572020-08-27T07:47:00.002-07:002020-08-27T08:00:41.733-07:00Some Modern US<p> mounting modern US sheets first then will move to used</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi303oeVEgiUwPwO_ldjZ35ZprzlzxkTo7E2Lziq9fOVKkbKo00XdwfRQEDDdcntSxS3-gK3zo48twHqtf58l7ng86ocThwQuVlPiUiFJ1Mkl4BAtbMnkaTlcepTNYfI0UmqUQ-VrO8OHVw/s2048/2018+p2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1535" height="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi303oeVEgiUwPwO_ldjZ35ZprzlzxkTo7E2Lziq9fOVKkbKo00XdwfRQEDDdcntSxS3-gK3zo48twHqtf58l7ng86ocThwQuVlPiUiFJ1Mkl4BAtbMnkaTlcepTNYfI0UmqUQ-VrO8OHVw/w600-h800/2018+p2.jpg" width="600" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd3yDmXvupmj3We_Mu70fV5hJ3dMBtFtUal1uReUHYVLyAmhm96ijOjFuevDi6o243PG_kfB19YOA95nobJCUU8z3vhm2pcsuwL1z8V2r6L1Lb2sxyJDVwuUdWT3FPsKhfcWbkFg5R19NW/s2048/2018+p3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1539" height="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd3yDmXvupmj3We_Mu70fV5hJ3dMBtFtUal1uReUHYVLyAmhm96ijOjFuevDi6o243PG_kfB19YOA95nobJCUU8z3vhm2pcsuwL1z8V2r6L1Lb2sxyJDVwuUdWT3FPsKhfcWbkFg5R19NW/w601-h800/2018+p3.jpg" width="601" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrMaCFylHjO_BVn81aaUP6gisWp8frCCyhzPpcU3_rI6Ds-Ghy7KWJKxm8nZj2IjTn691KZHfK8z_oxwePT1MZHQltd1su9siz82uYkqd9xlDzAszg_nbUNOplWuauqsErpGgb4ICM5kUs/s2048/2020+p1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1574" height="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrMaCFylHjO_BVn81aaUP6gisWp8frCCyhzPpcU3_rI6Ds-Ghy7KWJKxm8nZj2IjTn691KZHfK8z_oxwePT1MZHQltd1su9siz82uYkqd9xlDzAszg_nbUNOplWuauqsErpGgb4ICM5kUs/w615-h800/2020+p1.jpg" width="615" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSX0_8n9F60n2sy30ObZfxnJt-pvuhkFXIU5PwuRS0HK9VAjAs-ad9EiOr7HaP4U3DUu8nP8jtwOBKoBTayal4uWUY0E93hL6J5fW7wWRvy3e0511S3DkGxkdbJJiZfYGiD1BbKVyEOszt/s2048/2020+p2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1581" height="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSX0_8n9F60n2sy30ObZfxnJt-pvuhkFXIU5PwuRS0HK9VAjAs-ad9EiOr7HaP4U3DUu8nP8jtwOBKoBTayal4uWUY0E93hL6J5fW7wWRvy3e0511S3DkGxkdbJJiZfYGiD1BbKVyEOszt/w618-h800/2020+p2.jpg" width="618" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkAfoClDr_Pozosb4u_6OzfK4k4gaWyipV2DEJJujqYqgC6_OSIWwI6kvhy7kUyoKpjZ1wnIh0BBeGU2FV63zMH-l6vQ-veThNvMWKSpwLPwJ9cB5TsTGMMRSaSCVoV_ecMlxdql_LrK-U/s2048/2020+p3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1570" height="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkAfoClDr_Pozosb4u_6OzfK4k4gaWyipV2DEJJujqYqgC6_OSIWwI6kvhy7kUyoKpjZ1wnIh0BBeGU2FV63zMH-l6vQ-veThNvMWKSpwLPwJ9cB5TsTGMMRSaSCVoV_ecMlxdql_LrK-U/w614-h800/2020+p3.jpg" width="614" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>clifhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15275057382385144812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6316433756215801144.post-72980919118450333072019-10-01T04:05:00.001-07:002019-10-15T15:40:16.510-07:00Finishing up a stack of Portugal pages<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">been scanning every morning ... am up to ~65 countries with a number of subcategories, especially in my US collections. This morning I started on my Canada. Lots of pages, lots of holes, lots of loose stamps to see if I can fill those holes. Seems it's easier for me to just go look and buy stamps to fill the holes while I'm working on a country than it is to go though my loose stamps collections to fill those holes. Meanwhile, while I'm waiting for the mail, I move on ... and rinse and repeat.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">So trying to stop buying while I'm scanning. It's hard.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">once I have my pages all scanned (around Thanksgiving hopefully), I can then start sorting though my boxes of purchased materials ... and THEN if I don't already have a space printed, I can print more pages.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Sigh ... I AM making progress though.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">couldn't resist trying to get this set started. This is not my collection ... but rather a facebook pic posted to show completion. The entire set used runs ~$1300 catalog value. I purchased a set of the first six with nice cancels for $65. Of course the last five in the set are the most expensive ... but maybe one every month or so.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>

I am buried in stamps, stamp paraphernalia, stamp albums, etc. I considered just selling out completely ... I knew that I wouldn't get a tenth of what it was all worth but I was on the verge of just not caring.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;">Well Diane talked me out of that ... so after a lot of thinking about how to proceed, I may have got a start on bringing some order into my world.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;">Step 1 is to scan and record ALL of the album pages that I have printed and/or purchased. Yes this may take a while. I hope to get ~50 pages scanned per day for the foreseeable future ... I have ~20 binders (1 inch, 2 inch, and 3 inch) full of Steiner pages that I've printed over the years (plus multiple various piles and folders of printed pages). A few are full of the black vario-brand pages. Plus I have a full set of Minkus albums, a Revenue stamp album, a plate block album, a set of Mystic heirloom US Stamp albums, and a dozen various stockbooks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;">So scanning will take a while.</span><br />

collection that I picked up somewhere. Anyway, thought I'd do some research on
it. One of the previous owners, probably a dealer, has optimistically suggested
that this is a U329 valued at $14.00 (see the faint pencil marks left </span><span style="font-family: "constantia"; font-size: 18pt;">side). </span><span style="font-family: "constantia"; font-size: 18pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We will see. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">in conversations with friends and family I often mention stamp-related things I wouldn't mind receiving as Christmas and/or birthday gifts. It was pointed out to me that non-stampy people would have a hard time finding or knowing what or how to obtain such items to give as gifts. </span><br />

I then either print pages to mount the stamps (1953-present) or use my Minkus Global for those older than 1953. It's a way of "working the stamps" and gaining ground on the building hoard ... err collection.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's a page I was playing with today ...</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">6) Australia before it was Australia was composed of six different states. In 1901 these states formed the Commonwealth of Australia (the states still exist but now with a centralized gov't much like the US). What's cool is that those different states all issued stamps up til 1901 ... one of those states was <b>Victoria </b>and I happened to have a Victoria stamp on this vario! This particular stamp was issued in 1886 and is Victoria #162. A handsome stamp indeed!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">7) common beat up <b>France</b> stamp. Went on a bit of a wild goose chase at first when trying to identify .. looking for the colony <i>Finistere </i>... turns out that it's the western-most most region of France (included a map from Wikipedia) and the <i>Pointe du Raz</i> is the western-most tip of land. Cool. Oh yeah ... found the stamp under France printed in 1946. H Cheffer is a well known (at least in circles of people who care about stamps and engravers) engraver of French stamps. I might do an article on stamp engravers at some point ...</span></div>

My first hit was this <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_E._Lawrence">wiki</a> page about James E. Lawrence, a University of Michigan football star. This bio included family information and listed two sisters ... Harriet and Grace! I didn't find a lot more information about James Lawrence ... but I did find that Miss Harriet married Arthur Roy Wren in 1906. That clears up who was the author of all those letters written in 1903-04.<br />
<br />
A bit of <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=AAbiAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA515&lpg=PA515&dq=harriet+wren+ypsilanti&source=bl&ots=PKZbV7HJft&sig=uoWiqsDYjubKOyTvdkg9U6m61-0&hl=en&sa=X&ei=CEmpVOWwGIqBygSxooHgAw&ved=0CDsQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=harriet%20wren%20ypsilanti&f=false">further research</a> into Arthur Roy Wren revealed that he too had graduated from the University of Michigan in 1898 and also played football while in school. It also turns out the Miss Harriet graduated from the Michigan State Normal School (later Michigan State). At the time (and previously) ARW was employed by various mining companies in Mexico.<br />
<br />
That was all I could find out about the family ... I did do some research into both the National Metals and Consolidated Metals Companies. As expected there was so much buying out of each other and overlap in those days that it was nearly impossible to sort out.<br />

I had a lot of fun researching some of the history behind the people and places ...<br />
<br />
this first cover is the first in a series of letters from ARW in Mexico (in this case Guadalajara) to a Miss Harriet Lawrence of Ludington MI in July of 1903. I confess that I originally picked these covers out of a box of hundreds because of the stamps ... interesting that as I started researching the people ... I sort of lost interest in the stamps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdZdSoFpiSCb7RAYNgJytibNSjjzuqjsWBieRhB3K0AAKaqg9iFkyeZvfl4NJ0pqPW-48BKTzXtjUMu8tVyuTB_XWWsuvpi1V6bircLZc36L-UA7I1gwg51b_ANwvzqpvjE5G-NgBXblRL/s1600/mexico+cover+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdZdSoFpiSCb7RAYNgJytibNSjjzuqjsWBieRhB3K0AAKaqg9iFkyeZvfl4NJ0pqPW-48BKTzXtjUMu8tVyuTB_XWWsuvpi1V6bircLZc36L-UA7I1gwg51b_ANwvzqpvjE5G-NgBXblRL/s1600/mexico+cover+3.jpg" height="392" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
this next set of covers all come from the same return address. I say set because I have 4 covers but only picked the best stamps and postmarks ... there were probably a dozen in the box. The date has jumped forward a year ... these were all postmarked in the fall of 1904. The addressee has also moved to Ypsilanti MI.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhME5aEMSTDLqAhXsRsyTW5cYu3pezO-G6CVFPN-9jMczyLeHxJCPfo2eFQEo4Bwxo4I3WGCOnIgM0f8WJBr9FLAOcZ63bRIrv9wUhxrtiQoOBXMLzWnyd_HDAOtuMM1yFieqIHICN_l8de/s1600/mexico+cover+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhME5aEMSTDLqAhXsRsyTW5cYu3pezO-G6CVFPN-9jMczyLeHxJCPfo2eFQEo4Bwxo4I3WGCOnIgM0f8WJBr9FLAOcZ63bRIrv9wUhxrtiQoOBXMLzWnyd_HDAOtuMM1yFieqIHICN_l8de/s1600/mexico+cover+1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
here is a closeup of the best postmark and stamp in the lot<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguY0AYBedr1H6MP9OrqB2XzqFNMEDPl_PTvYUg9s5bFItTOvNxjNggMvjpL6m581EECye06Qv9A80rS39opPFb9NoMmOx4LyhSGpOHd_Be-s5uFaJoo8PSrl2tJnS_JtHyhMPyvQes3mI6/s1600/mexico+cover+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguY0AYBedr1H6MP9OrqB2XzqFNMEDPl_PTvYUg9s5bFItTOvNxjNggMvjpL6m581EECye06Qv9A80rS39opPFb9NoMmOx4LyhSGpOHd_Be-s5uFaJoo8PSrl2tJnS_JtHyhMPyvQes3mI6/s1600/mexico+cover+2.jpg" height="276" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
next we have a letter addressed to a Miss Grace E. Lawrence at the same address ... a sister perhaps? No return address, but the same Mexican stamp lends one to believe that the letter came from the same author. I cannot make out the postmark date ... even on the back the date is unfortunately smeared or covered up ...<br />

He mentioned the explosion while unloading ammo off of the USS Solar DE-221 a few weeks earlier at a different dockyard ... info from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Solar_(DE-221)">wikipedia</a></div>

The operation went smoothly until, shortly after 11:30, one of the crewmen dropped a hedgehog charge. He was able to escape with relatively minor injuries, but three ensuing explosions blasted the ship near her number 2 upper handling rooms. Her number 2 gun was demolished and the bridge, main battery director, and mast were all blown aft and to starboard. Both sides of the ship were torn open, and her deck was a mass of flames. The order to abandon ship came after the second explosion and was carried out expeditiously. Nevertheless, the tragedy claimed the lives of 7 sailors and injured 125 others.</span><br style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 13.8666696548462px; max-height: 1000000px; word-wrap: break-word;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 13.8666696548462px;">Salvage work on Solar was begun by 15:00, and her wrecked superstructure was cut off to prevent her capsizing. She was moved to New York, where she decommissioned on 21 May 1946. Solar was then stripped of all usable equipment, towed 100 nautical miles (200 km) to sea, and sunk on 9 June 1946, in 700 fathoms (1,300 m) of water. Her name was struck from the Navy List on 5 June 1946.</span></span><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17.3333339691162px; line-height: 13.8666696548462px; margin: 0px; max-height: 1000000px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;"><br style="max-height: 1000000px; word-wrap: break-word;" /> </span></blockquote>

I was able to identify the author of the letter. His name is Joseph H. Cowan, he was born in 1926. The <a href="http://www.archives.com/1940-census/joseph-cowan-ny-58284100">1940 US Census</a> lists him as the 14 year-old son of Harry G and Irene Cowan. I am still looking for information about the ship Joseph Cowan was serving on (the lack of return address makes this harder).<br />

This issue includes five versions of the attractive 6¢ and 8¢ US flag flying over the White House. The issue was numbered as Scott #1338 (perf 11 sheet), 1338 A (coil), 1338 D (perf 11 x 10.5 and printed by Huck Press), the 8¢ 1338 F, and 1838 G (8¢ coil).<br />

What does one call a blog about stamps and stamp collecting? The technical term for stamp collecting is philately ... so "A Philatelic Walk"? How about "Stamps and the Art of Philatelizing"? "Philatelists on Parade"??<br /><br />In my search for a meaningful, yet not too off-the-wall title ... we'll just settle for Clif's Stamps for now. Descriptive and plain ...<br /><br />Anyhow, here it is ... my thoughts, pictures, discussions and descriptions of any and all stamps that come across my table.<br />
